ŌMCARE: HOME HEALTHCARE DEVICE DESIGN

Ōmcare had a vision for an in-home medical device design that links remote robotic medication dispensing with video confirmation, ensuring that every drug dispensing event is directly observed and confirmed. With this medical dispensing system, caregivers would know immediately if a dose is missed or incorrectly administered, creating peace of mind around medication management. Other pill management systems and mobile compliance apps depend on self-reporting rather than direct observation. Ōmcare wanted a healthcare product design approach that would change how the industry measures medication adherence, paving the way for quality, remote medication management.

Healthcare Device Drivers

Ōmcare’s major need was to prove remote robotic medicine dispensing, consumption assistance and support using two-way video. Three-way calling capabilities were also needed in order to keep the patient’s care team connected.
There were additional healthcare product design needs including longitudinal data storage and retrieval for medication adherence confirmation, along with EHR integration to support physician directives.

Kablooe’s Design Solution

Kablooe saw opportunities to enhance the functionality and usability of the home healthcare device design. Using our proven D3 (Design Driven Development) process, Kablooe created a product design solution that incorporated locked medication storage/delivery and multi dose dispensing all with a simple one-touch interaction. Going beyond simply solving for medication management and adherence, the Ōmcare device is a conduit of quality home health care. Video interaction integrated with various remote monitoring, wearable technology and telehealth services ensure home healthcare is more sustainable and convenient than ever. When designing home healthcare devices, Kablooe knows that these types of human factors are a top priority.

Outcomes

With data collected over time, care team members are able to manage and treat chronic conditions in a way that is effective, timely, and realistic to both the patient and caregiver’s lifestyles. The data generated through this approach can help facilitate conversations between patients and physicians, providing opportunities to intervene quickly to avoid complications. Using this new home healthcare device technology, a patient managing a chronic condition can connect more frequently with their care team from home, and spend less time going to and from the doctor’s office.
